Former Blue Lagoon star Christopher Atkins shot to stardom more than 40 years ago, mostly because of his part in the classic 1980 movie. Though it was never his desire to be an actor, fate had other ideas.

Atkins was born in New York and spent his childhood dreaming of playing professional baseball. However, a knee injury put a stop to his athletic career. Rather than going to the baseball field, he ended up taking a stab at modeling and teaching sailing. His breakthrough role as Richard in The Blue Lagoon—a part that would alter his life forever—came about as a result of a fateful audition.

Atkins’s selection for the role out of 4,000 applicants was evidence of his unquestionable magnetism on film, as Now to Love explained. The movie, which co-starred Brooke Shields, was an immediate box office hit and followed the tale of two youngsters who become shipwrecked on a tropical island.

The teenage actor found it daunting to appear in one of the first major films with male nudity, yet his performance won over viewers from all over the world.

“It was love at first sight, and six months later we were married,” he reminisced of their brief affair. We subsequently had two children, Brittany and Grant. But there was a darker side to the glitzy Hollywood lifestyle.

As Atkins’s career developed, the demands of celebrity started to get to him. He was driven towards drunkenness by his high expectations, lavish parties, and frequent travel.

The family had made their home in Los Angeles, but when Atkins learned that his previous manager had embezzled almost half a million dollars from him, their seemingly idyllic life fell apart. The star almost went bankrupt as a result of the financial betrayal, which precipitated an alcohol-fueled breakdown in 1986. He told Lifestyle Magazine, looking back on that difficult time, “There is nothing worse than having your whole life pulled out from under you.”

Atkins is proud of the fact that he has been clean for more than 30 years. He tried hard to be a loving father, giving his kids, Grant and Brittany, his whole attention. While Brittany moved into acting and appeared in British children’s films, including one scripted by her father, Grant followed his goal of playing baseball.

Atkins kept working in television and movies, but he yearned for another big box office success similar to The Blue Lagoon. “I’ve worked as an actor for 43 years, so I consider myself an actor… I still have dreams of appearing in a “A” film someday,” he said.

When it comes to love, Atkins is still optimistic. Even after 20 years of marriage and several romantic relationships, he continues to look for someone who shares his enthusiasm for life. “I want a woman, but I’m too old for drama, apparently. According to Page Six, he said, “A woman who loves to laugh, can be spontaneous…has to be open.”

Atkins, who is now a grandfather to three boys, is incredibly happy in his new job. “I take them snake hunting, and we have a great time camping, fishing, playing ball, and wrestling all the time. They’re a ton of fun,” he exclaimed.
