A joke at the 2024 Emmys shocked Meryl Streep – now viewers are divided at what it meant

There was a lot of hype surrounding the Emmys. There were a lot of jokes among the many victories and losses. Some jokes, meanwhile, might not have clicked the way they were meant to.

To find out more about what transpired, continue reading.

But it’s possible that the actress didn’t anticipate being the subject of a really clever prank. Co-stars of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and real-life husband and wife, Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson, took the stage to give an award.

Presenting for the “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” category was the pair. Meryl Streep, of course, was one of the contenders for this category because of her performance in the film Only Murders in the Building.

The husband and wife team cracked a joke at the prize presentation that has since caused controversy on the internet.

“We are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place, ladies and gentlemen,” McElhenney declared. “They provide essential support when it’s most needed.”

Like a jockstrap, his wife Olson retorted to this. The description you provided sounds a lot like a jockstrap.

McElhenney pauses in response and responds, “No, it doesn’t! These positions ensure that everything remains safe. The entire thing collapses in the absence of this support. Well, it sounds like a jockstrap to me.

As the joke starts to go viral, Olson asks, “Are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?” to which McElhenney responds, “No! My apologies, Meryl.

The star of The Devil Wears Prada, who is looking shocked by the resemblance, is shown in the frame at this point.

“Oh, God,” Streep murmurs as she casts her gaze to the ground. And this is where the online discussion started.

Some believe Streep was laughing along, while others believe she took the joke harshly.

“I’m not sure who scripted the #EmmyAwards tonight’s dialogue, but it makes me laugh so hard. Meryl Streep was just likened as a jock strap. Indeed, it is that awful,” a user commented.

One more person said, “Wow. That jockstrap joke did not sit well with Meryl Streep.

“The jockstrap joke on Meryl Streep’s face.” “It’s a standing ovation in my house,” remarked someone.

Despite not taking home the prize, Streep was pictured grinning the entire evening.

The actress donned her characteristic glasses and a stunning baby pink Alexander McQueen suit complete with bows. Rumors regarding her involvement with Only Murders co-star Martin Short were further stoked when she was spotted sitting next to him.

Though Short has previously refuted reports of a possible romance developing between the two of them, they have frequently been photographed together in public, appearing to be friendly with one another.
