Michael J. Fox Releases Heartfelt Statement on His 30-Year Parkinson’s Battle
|Michael J. Fox has been dealing with complications resulting from his struggle with Parkinson’s disease for a long time, but he continues to display remarkable resilience in the face of daunting challenges.
Since receiving his diagnosis in the early 1990s, the actor, who is now retired, has become an emblem of the fight against this debilitating condition. He has devoted himself to advocating for research and enhancing understanding of the disease.
Recently, the renowned star of “Back to the Future” has openly shared his challenges with Parkinson’s, acknowledging the decline in his health and expressing his expectation not to live to the age of 80.
Historically, the 61-year-old Michael J. Fox has consistently maintained a positive outlook regarding his Parkinson’s diagnosis, but he has never concealed the toll it has taken on his health and overall well-being.
In a recent interview, Fox confronted the topic of his mortality, acknowledging that living with Parkinson’s disease was becoming increasingly challenging.
“I’m not gonna lie. It’s getting hard, it’s getting harder. It’s getting tougher,” Fox candidly told CBS Sunday Morning anchor Jane Pauley.
“Every day it’s tougher. But, but, that’s the way it is. I mean, you know, who do I see about that?”
He also mentioned that he had recently undergone spinal surgery after a benign tumor was found on his spine. Although the tumor was not harmful, it affected his ability to walk and led to some falls: “[I] broke this arm, and I broke this arm, I broke this elbow. I broke my face. I broke my hand,” Fox recounted to Pauley.
Fox concluded by saying, “You don’t die from Parkinson’s. You die with Parkinson’s. I’ve been thinking about the mortality of it. … I’m not gonna be 80. I’m not gonna be 80.”
Michael J. Fox’s ongoing battle with the brain disorder, which was initially diagnosed in 1991 when he noticed a tremor in his pinkie finger, has once again taken the spotlight with the upcoming release of his new documentary, “Still.” The documentary provides a glimpse into the actor’s life over the past three decades.
According to reports, he candidly admits in the film: “I’m in intense pain. Each tremor is like a seismic jolt.”
He further explained this statement in a recent interview, saying: “It’s not so much pain from the movement, but from the inability to move. It’s when you freeze, and in that frozen state, the lack of movement becomes infused with all this energy and it feels like a burning, impending sensation that never actually happens.”
“I don’t want to elicit sympathy. I’ve broken my hand, my elbow, my humerus, my other humerus, my shoulder, my face, and some other things too. And all of that is intensified by the electricity of the tremors. So, yes, it hurts a lot. But what you learn is that nobody really cares. It’s just life. It doesn’t matter. You tough it out and keep moving forward. And maybe there’s a story to be told in it, but that’s it. There’s no receipt you can hand to a window for a refund.”
Determined to maintain his optimism despite the obvious challenges, Michael J. Fox bravely assured everyone that he’s not giving up.
In light of his declining health, the actor had announced his retirement in 2021, saying, “The depression is not so deep that I’m going to injure myself… it always comes back to a place where I go, ‘Well, there’s more to celebrate in my life than there is to mourn.’ The pain speaks for itself. You either tolerate it or you don’t. And I’m not going anywhere.”
