Jamal Roberts Honors His Mississippi Roots With New Song “Missing You in Mississippi”
|Two months after his life-changing victory on American Idol Season 23, Jamal Roberts is beginning his next chapter—and it’s deeply personal. On July 8, 2025, the 27-year-old Mississippi native shared a heartfelt video on Instagram featuring his daughters and a sneak peek of his debut single, “Missing You in Mississippi.”
The song is set to officially release on July 25, and from what fans have already heard, it’s shaping up to be a powerful tribute to home, healing, and heritage.
A Personal Family Moment
In the Instagram clip, Roberts is seen surrounded by his three daughters in a cozy home setting. The video feels less like a music promo and more like a diary entry—a deeply personal moment shared with the world. In his caption, Roberts quoted the chorus:
“Traded in the lazy days I used to lay down by the river / Oh, how I miss it… I’m missing you in Mississippi / And it don’t feel the same without you with me.”
The video quickly went viral, with fans praising both the vulnerability of the lyrics and the authenticity of the family setting.

A Love Letter to Mississippi
Roberts, who hails from Meridian, Mississippi, has frequently spoken about how much his home state means to him. During a Facebook Live on July 2, he confirmed that this single is the first of several original tracks he’s been working on.
“My first song is gonna be dedicated to Mississippi,” Roberts said. “You know, the one you’re raised in is different.”
He revealed that he recorded the track throughout June in Los Angeles and Nashville, blending country soul with R&B undertones to reflect his signature style.
More Lyrics Reveal a Theme of Healing
Earlier this week, Roberts shared additional lyrics with fans:
“You know, lately it’s getting hard to handle / Healing is getting hard to channel / Can’t shake this feeling… Everything is for a reason / You know it’s cold, but it’s just a season.”
The poetic lines struck a chord with fans, many of whom relate to the emotions of grief, growth, and remembrance.
What’s Next for Jamal Roberts?
While a full album isn’t expected just yet, Roberts has made it clear he’s only getting started.
“After ‘Mississippi,’ I’m gonna give y’all a little time to breathe—and I do mean a little—and I’m gonna hit y’all with another.”
This fall, Roberts will also hit the road with R&B legends Monica and Brandy for their “Boy Is Mine” tour, performing in 24 cities across the U.S. from October to December 2025.
