The renowned actress and singer developed a love for singing through nights spent with her supportive mother. As a teenager, she focused on her singing and acting studies, choosing them over dating. During a meeting with a Warner Brothers talent scout, she was discouraged by a comment about her looks, which solidified her decision to pursue character roles instead of fitting conventional beauty standards.
While living at the Hollywood Studio Club, she worked as a dancer at Ciro’s nightclub, where Elvis Presley once asked her out. They later met on set, and she remembered him for his polite and friendly demeanor.
After beginning her Hollywood career, the actress met TV actor Michael Ansara on a blind date, and they married in 1958. They had a son, Matthew Ansara, in 1965. However, in 1971, she suffered the heartbreak of delivering a stillborn baby, which led to deep depression. This unresolved grief strained her relationship with Michael, and they divorced in 1974 after over a decade together. Around this time, their son Matthew began experimenting with drugs. After remarrying and moving to Chicago, the actress left Matthew in Los Angeles with his father, who threatened custody action.
For six years, the actress made regular visits to see her son, traveling every three weeks. Eventually, she realized the importance of therapy to fully confront and heal from her grief.
After her first marriage ended, the Hollywood star met and married Chuck Fegert in 1977. In her memoir, Jeannie Out of the Bottle, she recalled how he initially treated her well, often surprising her with flowers. However, after they married, his behavior changed as he became involved in a group that indulged in heavy drinking and cocaine use. This lifestyle led to rudeness and eventually abusive behavior, which led her to leave him. The couple divorced in 1982.
In her 50s, Barbara Eden never expected to find love again. However, she met architect Jon Eicholtz, and their connection grew over time. They married in 1991 when she was 60, building a strong relationship based on shared values, a love for travel, and unwavering loyalty. As Barbara put it, “I have his back and he has mine,” highlighting the deep support and companionship at the heart of their marriage.
Tragically, years after finding happiness, Barbara faced immense heartbreak when her son Matthew, 35, passed away from an accidental heroin overdose in 2001. She was left “devastated” when Matthew was found unresponsive in his car at a gas station in Monrovia, and paramedics later pronounced him dead.
Looking back, Barbara shared the guilt and sadness she felt, describing her son Matthew as a “beautiful human being” when sober, while expressing frustration over the hold of addiction on him. She and her first husband, Michael, had waited nearly seven years to welcome Matthew, an experience she called “the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me.” However, Matthew’s battle with addiction lasted 14 years, leading to erratic behavior that Barbara initially struggled to understand. “I was scared to death. I didn’t know what to do,” she admitted.

Amid her grief, she felt grateful for the unwavering support of her husband, Jon, saying, “I’m really lucky.” She expressed deep appreciation for him, acknowledging that she now has someone in her life who truly cares for her.
Barbara also attributes her lasting happiness to empathy, advising, “You should walk in the other person’s shoes” during conflicts. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity, urging others to “be true to yourself” and appreciate their unique qualities, a lesson she learned early in her career.
Barbara’s passion for her work remains unwavering. At 87, the I Dream of Jeannie star shared, “I will be kicking along until they kick me out. I love to work. If I don’t work, then I get lazy.” She also mentioned that if she had one wish, it would be to never stop working. Her dedication to her craft continues to fuel her as she enjoys the work she loves.
Now 93, Barbara credits her youthful energy to staying active and eating in moderation, a principle she learned from her parents. While her workouts have transitioned to a home-based routine using light weights and a stationary bike, she still fondly remembers the motivation she felt in gym classes.
Barbara Eden also shared that she enjoys her favorite foods, like Italian and German cuisine, but always practices balance in her diet.
