In her 2018 memoir, “My Days: Happy and Otherwise,” the actress detailed her marital difficulties, discussing the turbulent relationship with Freeman. She revealed how their seemingly stable life concealed deeper struggles beneath the surface.

Even though Effie held a steady job and the family seemed stable, the pressure to support her children and take on every available role took a toll on her. She admitted that he “never gave me the feeling that now things would be the way I had always wanted them to be.”

Over time, she recognized that Freeman was a “functioning alcoholic.” The actress explained that he would drink every evening until he passed out, yet still manage to wake up early, read the paper, and go to work, appearing to function normally despite his struggles.

However, the marriage was far from harmonious, with frequent arguments and yelling. She recalled how his mood swings intensified over time, and despite her attempts to encourage him, their relationship remained tense.

Ultimately, despite her efforts to keep the marriage intact, it reached a breaking point when she discovered that Freeman had begun having an affair with his secretary, prompting her to leave him.

After nearly two decades of marriage, the couple divorced. Reflecting on that difficult period, the actress shared, “When I was 40, I got divorced. Nobody had a job [for me], and I had two small children,” she revealed in an interview.

To make ends meet, she had to get creative with her finances. “I rented out one of the bedrooms in my house to pick up some money. I’d think, ‘I made $35 today.’ It was hard,” the Gilmore Girls star recalled.

After overcoming the challenges of her first marriage and single motherhood, Marion Ross found love again at 60 with actor Paul Michael. Their romance was characterized by deep affection and mutual understanding.

They often finished each other’s thoughts, held hands while speaking, and exchanged dreamy gazes, clearly displaying the signs of a couple deeply in love.

Reflecting on their bond in a 2010 interview, Ross remarked, “People are capable of very hot romances as they get older. We sort of forget that, and sort of give up on that.” Paul echoed her sentiments, saying, “These are the happiest days of my life.”

Tragically, their love story came to an end when Paul passed away in 2011 at the age of 84 due to heart failure. At that time, he and Marion had spent 23 years together, creating a heartfelt and enduring bond. She referred to Paul as “the love of my life.”
