Jeff Bridges’ Unconditional Love: Falling for a Waitress with Facial Injuries — A Journey of Loyalty Through Life’s Challenges

Jeff Bridges and his wife, Susan, celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in 2023, a remarkable milestone. Jeff fell in love with Susan at first sight, despite her being a waitress and having a facial injury. Years later, Susan demonstrated her love by remaining by Jeff’s side during difficult times, even when he faced life-threatening challenges.

Jeff Bridges has been in the entertainment industry for over 60 years, working as an actor, producer, and singer. While filming a hot tub scene for the 1975 movie Rancho Deluxe at Chico Hot Springs in Montana, he met his future wife, Susan “Sue” Geston. Despite her broken nose and black eye from a recent car accident, Jeff was captivated by her appearance and couldn’t take his eyes off her.

Jeff recalled being captivated by “her beauty and disfigurement,” describing it as “love at first sight.” He felt like a fascinated child, continuously sneaking glances at her during the scene, but each time, she noticed him. He admitted:

Jeff found Susan gorgeous, intrigued by the contrast between her beauty and disfigurement. After filming, he mustered the courage to ask her out on a date. In a humorous twist, Susan initially declined but mentioned they might run into each other later since she lived in a small town. As fate would have it, they did meet again, went out dancing, and Jeff ultimately fell in love with her.

The next day, Jeff had a meeting with a local real estate agent to view some property and invited Susan to join him. They visited a ranch house by the river, which turned out to be their first date. At that moment, Jeff felt a strong intuition that he was looking at the future home he would share with his “future wife.”

The thought of their future together worried Jeff, as he couldn’t bear the idea of losing the love of his life. Although he felt certain that Susan was the one for him, he was also apprehensive about whether they would have the same staying power as his parents. He admitted:

Eventually, Jeff learned to confront his fears as a natural part of life and came to terms with them. He admitted that his biggest fear was losing his freedom, but after two years of uncertainty, he finally proposed, reasoning that he could always get a divorce if things didn’t work out. However, he didn’t anticipate forming a deeper bond with Susan, which included having children, grandchildren, and experiencing other meaningful aspects of life that he believed were unattainable without marriage. Though the decision was daunting for him, his heart was fully open to the possibilities.

In 2020, at the age of 70, Jeff had been married to Susan for 43 years. He shared that they were different people but maintained their relationship through mutual respect. Instead of letting their differences create distance, they celebrated what made them unique, fostering a strong bond.

Jeff attributed their long-lasting marriage to his respect for Susan’s wisdom, feeling truly blessed to have her in his life. Despite facing various illnesses and challenges throughout their time together, he was grateful to have the best person by his side to support him.

Jeff’s Marriage to Susan and the Trials She Helped Him Conquer

Jeff grew up with a close bond to his older brother, Beau, and their parents. He fondly remembered how his mother would dedicate “time” to each child, allowing them an hour each day to do whatever they wanted with her, fostering a nurturing environment that contributed to his upbringing.

Speaking about his children, Jeff referred to them as his “real trophies.” He and Susan married in 1977 and later welcomed their beautiful daughters: Isabelle in 1981, Jessica two years later, and Haley in 1985. He expressed deep gratitude for each of them.

Jeff and his family were living fulfilling lives, having everything they could want. He worked to balance his photography, music, and family life, feeling that everything fell into place, largely thanks to Susan, who kept things running smoothly. Unfortunately, their peaceful existence was disrupted in October 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, when Jeff was diagnosed with cancer. At the time, he was filming FX’s The Old Man, but production was halted due to the virus, and it was during this period that he received the cancer diagnosis.

Jeff took to his X account to announce that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma but shared that his prognosis was promising. He committed to starting treatment and kept his fans updated on his recovery journey.

Susan remembered feeling numb after receiving the diagnosis, but she quickly focused on supporting her husband by figuring out the next steps. Jeff began chemotherapy with infusions before transitioning to oral chemotherapy, with Susan steadfastly by his side throughout the process.

With his family’s support, Jeff felt strengthened to continue his treatment. In December 2020, he tweeted a photo of himself smiling with a bald head, sharing that he felt good. He also mentioned getting a puppy named Monty, who was visible in the image, and celebrated his 71st birthday during this time.

By the New Year, Jeff shared a photo on Facebook featuring himself, his wife, and Monty. He wore a red beret over his shaved head and matched Susan in red and black attire. He captioned the photo, “May we dream together of the kind of world we’d like to live in,” before wishing everyone a happy new year.

In June 2019, Isabelle posted a throwback photo of her parents on Instagram, admitting that she sometimes felt inadequate compared to them. She described them as the “coolest people on the planet” but acknowledged that comparing herself to her parents wasn’t the best use of her time.

However, Isabelle celebrated her parents by expressing that she viewed them as her role models, especially for their determination to chase their dreams, even when they seemed unattainable.

By January 2021, just a month after Jeff started chemotherapy and his tumor began to shrink, both he and Susan were diagnosed with COVID-19, leaving them uncertain about his recovery. The situation became so serious that Susan received a call from the hospital informing her that her husband might need to be placed on a ventilator, which fortunately he did not require. In response, Susan expressed:

Doctors were concerned about Jeff’s condition, informing him that they needed him to fight because COVID-19 posed a greater threat than his cancer. Jeff felt uncertain about how to battle this new challenge, but in his mind, he boldly told death to “bring it on.”

Jeff felt ready to transition and surrender, but with his wife by his side, he persevered. He gushed, “My wife, Sue, was just my champion through the whole thing.” Fortunately, he didn’t require a ventilator, but he later admitted that he was close to dying, and the doctors encouraged him to keep fighting.

The mother of three expressed that her dream was to see her husband get out of bed, walk, and live a full life. She was confident that with the right care, he would achieve those goals—and he did!

In June 2022, Jeff appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, where he discussed his cancer journey. He shared that it all began with a feeling of pain, and a CAT scan revealed a 9×12-inch mass in his stomach.

When they received the COVID-19 diagnosis, Susan was hospitalized for five days, while Jeff, the “Crazy Heart” star, remained in the hospital for five weeks. He recalled struggling to breathe, with doctors continuously assuring him that they were doing their best to help him.

Jeff felt ready to give in, but his spirits lifted when he resolved to dance with Haley and walk her down the aisle at her wedding once he recovered. Thankfully, he was able to fulfill that promise, much to his wife’s joy.

By May 2022, the “True Grit” actor was back at work and expressed gratitude for his life. He spoke about how he now cherished life’s “simple pleasures” even more, especially when it came to spending quality time with his wife.

Susan credited the months of physical therapy Jeff underwent for the progress he had made. When asked about the significance of having her recognized as the Honored Mother at VNA Health’s 2012 Mother’s Day Luncheon, Jeff expressed his excitement for the recognition. He highlighted how Susan had consistently cared for him, their children, her mother, and their grandchildren over the years. It meant a great deal to Jeff to see Susan acknowledged in that way.

In June 2022, Jeff was interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he discussed his battles with cancer and COVID-19. At that time, he was fully recovered and shared the valuable lessons he learned while fighting to stay alive. He explained that because chemotherapy had stripped his body’s defenses, he had little ability to combat COVID-19, making the cancer seem “like nothing” in comparison.

Jeff also shared that he and Susan had ridden in an ambulance together to the hospital for treatment, and he noted that Susan made a quick and full recovery.

With a loving wife by his side, Jeff was able to recover from his ailments, and in 2023, he looked forward to celebrating a significant milestone. He remains so in love with Susan that he keeps a memento from their first meeting close to him.

The Love That Has Kept Jeff and Susan Going

In 2022, Jeff was in remission from cancer and credited Susan with giving him the resolve to keep going. That year, the couple celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, and Jeff expressed his belief that they were both committed to their relationship for the long haul.

The The Old Man star humorously remarked that he realized just how much his family liked him when they rallied around him during his COVID-19 diagnosis. This experience allowed him to view life as a gift and recognize its brevity.

Jeff viewed his past struggles as valuable lessons and recognized that his health battle revealed the healing power of love. In 2023, he acknowledged his wife and family for their unwavering support during the times he believed his end was near.

In the past, when discussing his wife, Jeff mentioned that he had learned a great deal from her. He credited her with helping him recognize his tendencies toward self-defeat and did the same for her. Whenever he doubted starting new projects, she would remind him that it was his typical reaction, a point he readily acknowledged.

Susan also helped Jeff see different perspectives, and their mutual care for one another made their relationship the most precious thing in their lives. However, the actor acknowledged that he would never fully know his wife, and vice versa. Yet, each time they had a disagreement, they realized that this “not knowing” was actually a positive aspect of their relationship.

The couple is at ease with facing tough times as long as they are together. After decades of navigating challenges, Jeff finds solace in the fact that when conflicts arise, they come out stronger and love one another even more afterwards.

Meanwhile, Isabelle viewed her parents’ marriage as an inspiration. She noted that they made time to ask each other questions about their interests, and despite her father’s fame, his family remained his “greatest joy.” Jeff treasured spending time with his loved ones, believing that nothing was more valuable than those moments. He embraced his character, Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, so much that he insisted his grandchildren call him “Dude-pa!”

However, his then two-year-old granddaughter, Gracie, couldn’t quite pronounce “Dude-pa” and hilariously referred to him as “Doody!” Being an eternal optimist, Jeff wasn’t offended by it at all.

By 2022, the actor had several grandchildren, including a newborn who arrived that year. Isabelle welcomed her first child, Grace “Gracie” Louise Boesch, on March 31, 2011, and later had a younger son, Ben, in 2020.

Jeff and Susan have created a loving family, and it all began on the day they first met—a moment captured in a photo that Jeff still carries with him to this day.

Ten years after meeting his wife, Jeff received a letter from the makeup artist for Rancho Deluxe. The artist revealed that he had taken two photos when Jeff first spoke to Susan, and the star has kept one of those images in his wallet ever since.

Aside from his flourishing love life, Jeff has successfully returned to work—something he thought might never happen after falling ill. He completed shooting the first season of The Old Man and is currently working on its second season.

In December 2023, 250 items from Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1998 classic film The Big Lebowski, which stars Jeff, will be auctioned off as part of a joint event by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies. The actor is pleased to see his life returning to normal after a challenging period.
