Kirk’s career abruptly veered away from popular entertainment and toward nearly solely Christian media. His apocalyptic Christian thrillers “Left Behind” sold 65 million copies and did pretty well in Christian film circles. He went on to become the face of the franchise.

In addition, he starred in the 2008 independent movie “Fireproof,” which went on to become the highest-grossing movie of the year. In it, he plays a firefighter who saves strangers but is unable to keep his marriage intact.

Beyond the stage, Kirk has devoted his life to sharing his religion. Along with New Zealand evangelist Ray Comfort, he co-founded “The Way of the Master,” a radio and television ministry, in 2002.
