Ashanti recently captivated sports fans with her powerful rendition of the national anthem at the World Series. However, despite her effort and vocal talent, many online felt the performance didn’t showcase her best.

Standing center stage on the expansive green field of Yankee Stadium, Ashanti, known for her hit “Baby,” began singing into a sparkling, bedazzled microphone after her introduction. She performed the national anthem before Game 4 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

Ashanti, looking stunning in denim blue jeans, matching boots, a Yankees team t-shirt, and a striking fluffy puffer jacket, delivered the anthem with her unique soulful style, incorporating riffs and falsetto notes into the performance.

Though fans in the stands seemed to enjoy Ashanti’s performance, online reactions were much harsher. Many expressed strong disapproval of her rendition, criticizing how she sounded.

One Facebook user commented, “Nope, sounds like something may be in her throat! Geez, they will applaud anything! Lol,” while another added, “Worst one I’ve ever heard lol.”

Echoing the criticism, one person wrote, “She was NOT amazing. She was terrible. Just sing it the way it’s written, or don’t sing it at all.” Another commented, “Can anyone just sing the song normal and no extra—that would be dope.”

In addition to her performance, Ashanti, a reported Yankees fan, was spotted cheering for her favorite team from the grandstands of Yankee Stadium. Next to her was Nelly, who, according to a video shared on X by Major League Baseball (MLB), is not particularly a Yankees fan.

In the X post, the “Rain on Me” musician can be heard enthusiastically shouting, “Let’s go, Yankees!” Following her cheer, Nelly responds with something that appears to contradict her enthusiasm, eliciting a big laugh from Ashanti.
