Struggling to Make Ends Meet

Later, he was able to rent an inexpensive apartment in the same building that Paul Newman had previously occupied. They lived in the building for two years. Their second son, Ramón, arrived so quickly that they were forced to deliver the child by themselves without having time to travel to the hospital.

The baby became lodged in the birth canal during their difficult delivery, and Janet lost a lot of blood. Although Martin had phoned for an ambulance, the infant came first.

When the placenta was going to come out, Martin mistakenly believed they would have twins. Janet corrected him. Luckily, upon arriving to the hospital, the mother and son were declared well.

During the filming of his Vietnam picture “Apocalypse Now” in the Philippines, Martin experienced a heart attack and thinned out; however, his spouse assisted him in getting back on his feet. He was evacuated to Makati Medical Center in Manila following the heart attack. It’s just a movie, Janet said to him as he was hurried down the hallway in a gurney.

He began to feel better when he understood she was right, and the connection they forged that day strengthened their marriage. He had made it through the mental half of the heart attack, and Janet was assisting him in his psychic healing.

Martin’s heart attack has a cost. He acknowledged, “I fell apart completely.” My soul was revealed. I sobbed uncontrollably. My beard and eyes both became gray.” While he was receiving critical care, his wife slept on the floor by his side.

Martin understood, though, that he had to put in a lot of work to overcome this, and accepting responsibility for his role in his health issues was one of those tasks.

His wife tried to make him laugh during his quadruple-bypass heart surgery in December 2015. She advised him not to take himself too seriously all the time.
