Challenges Behind the Scenes

Despite Alana’s continued public presence through 2019, her family life was deteriorating out of the spotlight. During this time, Mama June faced escalating addiction issues that ultimately led her to sell their home and personal possessions.

Alana later disclosed that her mother misappropriated $35,000 from her earnings after a 2019 appearance on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ She mentioned that the money was only returned recently and without any apology from her mother.

A Heartbreaking Loss and a Commitment

Tragedy struck in December 2023 when Alana’s sister, Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell, passed away from cancer at the age of 29. Before her death, Anna made Alana promise to pursue a specific goal.

Alana shared in an interview, ‘Anna told me, if I pass and you’re not in nursing school, I will haunt you.’ This promise became a significant turning point in her life.

Motivated by her sister’s wish, Alana enrolled in nursing school, aiming to specialize in pediatric care, a goal she has diligently pursued ever since.

Starting Anew in Denver

By 2025, Alana’s life had undergone a substantial transformation. She moved approximately 1,600 miles to attend Regis University in Denver, where she began her journey to become a pediatric intensive care unit nurse.

Alana has also spoken about a relationship that provided her support during her challenging times. In an Instagram post that month, she recalled meeting her boyfriend, Jalen, during a particularly difficult period marked by her mother’s addiction, while living with her sister Pumpkin’s family.

Jalen became her primary source of support, respecting her feelings about her mother and eventually relocating from Georgia to Colorado to be with her.

Around this same time, Alana began to rebuild her relationship with Mama June, who had been sober for over five years. The two now film together for WE tv’s ‘Mama June: Family Crisis,’ which premiered its seventh season in May 2025.

Alana expressed that forgiving her mother was challenging, but she learned to let go of expectations and instead focused on the fact that her mother will always be her mom.

A Dangerous Incident

The journey to Denver was not without its challenges. In late September 2025, Alana was involved in a severe car accident when another vehicle, reportedly going 40 miles per hour, collided with hers on the driver’s side.

She was taken to the hospital for evaluation due to back pain and headaches but was released to recover at home, with her family traveling to Denver to assist her in securing a rental car and settling in once again.

By March 2026, Alana had established a consistent routine, making a public appearance at SiriusXM studios that showcased just how distanced she had become from the chaos of her earlier years.

Celebrating 21 with Educational Aspirations

In April 2026, Mama June confirmed that Alana was on track to graduate from college the following year, diligently working towards her goal of becoming a PICU nurse, while already having a job in a Denver hospital.

On August 28, 2026, Alana celebrated her 21st birthday, no longer the little girl known primarily for a catchphrase, but rather a young woman close to achieving a significant milestone that no one else in her family has accomplished.

‘When I graduate, I’ll be the only one in my family with a degree,’ Alana stated. ‘I take pride in having persevered beyond how others perceived me.’

If she graduates as expected in 2027, Alana has said she will become the first person in her family to earn a college degree. That milestone may provide the clearest measure of how far her life has moved from the little girl America first knew as Honey Boo Boo.

After fourteen years marked by her mother’s struggles, the loss of a sister, and a promise made on a deathbed, Alana Thompson’s photos convey a narrative that transcends her nickname.
