Dolly Parton Explains Why She Turned Down ‘American Idol’ — ‘I Don’t Want to Judge or Hurt Anyone’
|Dolly Parton, the beloved country music icon, has turned down multiple offers to serve as a judge on hit shows like American Idol and The Voice — and her reason has fans feeling even more admiration for her.
In a May 2025 interview with E! News, Parton opened up about why she’s repeatedly declined full-time roles on singing competitions, despite her previous guest appearances. While fans might imagine it’s due to her busy schedule or other commitments, her real reason is rooted in deep empathy:
“I’ve been asked to do that a lot of times. It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it, because I know how sincere everybody is,” Parton said.
“Even if they’re not that good, they believe they are. And I just can’t hurt people.”
Dolly Parton Has Appeared on Both Shows — But Only as a Mentor
While Dolly won’t be taking a judge’s seat any time soon, she has contributed to both American Idol and The Voice in special guest roles. In 2008, she mentored the Top 9 contestants on American Idol season 7, who performed her catalog of songs. She also made appearances as a guest mentor on The Voice during seasons 9 and 11.
Her wisdom and warmth made a lasting impression on both contestants and viewers, which is exactly why producers continue to pursue her for larger roles — but the answer, for now, remains no.
Too Busy for Judging — Parton Celebrates 40 Years of Dollywood
Beyond her hesitance to critique performers, Parton’s schedule is packed. She’s currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of Dollywood, her beloved theme park nestled in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
“I thought, ‘Well, what if they don’t come?’” she recalled about the park’s opening.
“Then I started seeing cars coming in… and 40 years later, we’ve got them still coming.”
Parton compared Dollywood’s growth to raising a family, saying:
“It’s like having a house full of kids. Every time something new goes in, it’s like, ‘Oh, we got a new baby in the family.’”
Fans React with Respect and Love
Dolly Parton’s refusal to serve as a judge is a testament to her values: kindness, compassion, and authenticity. In an entertainment world filled with sharp critiques and viral takedowns, her gentleness stands out as a powerful example of humanity.
