From the Idol Stage to Real-Life Impact

Since winning, Jamal has wasted no time stepping into the spotlight beyond the competition. From intimate live performances to early talks of a debut album, he’s turning momentum into a movement. His calendar is full, but his passion keeps growing.

For many fans, Jamal is more than a winner — he’s an inspiration. He reminds dreamers everywhere that talent mixed with heart can turn the impossible into reality.

Meridian’s Hometown Hero

Jamal Roberts became a household name in May 2025 when he won American Idol, but in his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi, he’s still known as Coach Jamal.

Before touring with R&B legends Brandy and Monica in October, the father of three made time to coach a summer basketball team of 17 elementary school boys. Though the team didn’t win the state championship this year, Jamal made sure their efforts didn’t go unnoticed.

On September 11, he surprised his players with a trunk full of brand-new Nike Air Jordan 4 sneakers, teaching them an important life lesson:

“Even during a losing season, if you gave it your all, you can still be rewarded.”

He shared the emotional moment on Facebook Live, where fans watched the kids scream with excitement as they opened their boxes.

A question was asked, can you be rewarded in a losing season, and the answer is yes ✍🏿🖤💪🏾. Good game, Crestwood; we’ll get them next year. You played a great game, and if I had to choose another team, it would be you. 😎 Until after the tour, Coach Roberts signing off.🤞🏾

Teaching Resilience Through Generosity

Jamal knows what it means to face disappointment. Before Idol, he placed third on BET’s Sunday Best in 2021, an experience that gave him “thick skin” and prepared him for future success.

Reflecting on his team’s season, Jamal said:

“They fought their hardest. I didn’t give critiques because I honestly thought they played their best. I wouldn’t trade ’em for anything.”

The day after rewarding the boys’ team, he also surprised the girls’ basketball team with new shoes, captioning his post:

“I could never forget about my girls 🥰 They a lil sassy so I made them wait a day 🤣 #girldad”

Fans flooded his comments with praise, with one writing: “Y’all made the right person famous. Well done, America!”

What’s Next for Jamal Roberts

From October through mid-December, Jamal will join Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” U.S. Tour, bringing his soulful voice to stages across the country.

But even as his star rises, Jamal’s heart remains with his community. Through both music and mentorship, he’s building a legacy that extends far beyond the Idol stage.
