Angelina Jolie Cries During Rousing Standing Ovation for Maria at Venice Film Festival

The response to her most recent movie has made Angelina Jolie quite emotional.

At the 2024 Venice Film Festival, Jolie, who plays the role of the late opera singer Maria Callas in director Pablo Larraín’s Maria, was given an eight-minute standing ovation during the film’s Thursday, August 29 premiere at the Sala Grande Theater.

After the film ended, Jolie, 49, started crying as the crowd cheered.

The Academy Award-winning actress turned her gaze away from the audience for a moment as she wiped away her tears. Jolie also gave hugs to 48-year-old Larraín and her co-stars as they observed the audience’s fondness for the movie.

Videos of Jolie during the standing ovation were shared on social media by a number of users. Variety’s Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh remarked on X (previously known as Twitter) that “Angelina Jolie’s 8-minute standing ovation at #Venezia81 for ‘Maria’ is the most rapturous applause I’ve seen at the festival since Brendan Fraser launched his Oscar campaign for The Whale here two years ago.”

Jolie looked stunning in a custom strapless beige Tamara Ralph gown for the premiere, complete with pleated skirt hem, romantic draping down the silhouette, and a fur stole covering the sleeves.

She contrasted the monochrome earth-tone attire with a vivid red lip that complemented her nails.
