Ed the Zebra Safely Captured One Week After Escaping in Tennessee

What’s black and white and captured the hearts of an entire state? Ed the zebra, the runaway animal who became a local celebrity in Rutherford County, Tennessee, after escaping from his new owners on May 31, 2025.

After a week of viral sightings and shutdown highways, Ed was safely recovered on June 8, thanks to the help of professional capture teams — including Texas-based Tango 82 Aviation.

A Wild Week on the Run

Ed, who had only been in his new home for one day before his escape, quickly became the center of public fascination. The zebra was spotted near Interstate 24, in local fields, and even in residential neighborhoods throughout the Christiana area, just outside Murfreesboro.

Law enforcement and the community joined in the search, with videos and photos spreading rapidly across social media. Dubbed a “celebrity zebra” by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Ed became the subject of national attention.

From Zeke to Ed: How a Viral Moment Gave Him a New Name

Though the owners — Laura and Taylor Ford — originally named the zebra Zeke, the internet had other plans.

“When we brought the zebra home, our family named him Zeke,” the Fords said in a statement to WSMV 4 Nashville.
“But social media — and the world — had a different idea. Through viral posts, news coverage, and thousands of messages, he became known as Ed the Zebra. And now, he will be forever known as Ed — a symbol of joy, laughter, and unity.”

A Community United Around a Zebra

After days of searching, Tango 82 Aviation located Ed and returned him safely to his owners. The zebra is now healthy, calm, and reunited with his animal companion.

“In a time when there’s often so much noise and negativity, Ed’s story has brought people together,” the Fords shared. “He’s reminded us all of the good that still exists — and the incredible power of community.”

A Happy Ending

On June 8, Laura Ford took to Facebook to share the good news:

“After days of searching, we’re thrilled to share that Ed is safe, healthy, and reunited with his companion — and headed home where he belongs.”

💫 The zebra saga ends with a happy homecoming — and a new local legend.
