|Just one day after the death of beloved actor Graham Greene, Oscar-winning actor and director Kevin Costner shared an emotional tribute, remembering their time together on the set of Dances With Wolves. Greene passed away on September 1, 2025, at the age of 73 after a long illness.
Kevin Costner’s Tribute to Graham Greene
In his heartfelt message, Costner reflected on Greene’s dedication and talent, particularly his commitment to portraying the Native American medicine man Kicking Bird with authenticity. For the role, Greene learned to speak the Lakota language — something he admitted was not easy since he had not grown up speaking a Native language.
“A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on Dances With Wolves. I think of how willing he was to learn the Lakota language. I think of my joy when I heard that his work on the film was recognized with an Academy Award nomination,” Costner wrote.
Costner also shared one of the most memorable scenes between his character, John Dunbar, and Greene’s Kicking Bird, praising the actor’s ability to convey depth with few words:
“I think of this scene in particular, when he was able to establish so much about the relationship between Dunbar and the natives with so few words. He was a master at work and a wonderful human being. I’m grateful to have been witness to this part of his lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Graham.”
