From Child Star to Iconic Actress

Born Michele Marie Fabares in Santa Monica, California, in 1944, she was inspired by her aunt, actress Nanette Fabray, who had already established a successful career in entertainment. Fabares began modeling at a young age and, by the time she was 10, had landed her first television role.

Fabares starred in three films alongside Elvis Presley: ‘Girl Happy,’ ‘Spinout,’ and ‘Clambake.’ Additionally, she received praise for her role in the Emmy-winning film ‘Brian’s Song.’ Her extensive career also featured appearances in ‘One Day at a Time,’ ‘The Love Boat,’ and ‘Murder, She Wrote.’

A Loyal Partnership

Fabares and Mike Farrell first crossed paths in 1970 while on the set of his series ‘The Interns,’ but their connection did not flourish at that time. She was still married to record producer Lou Adler, whose marriage had already quietly unraveled, although the divorce was finalized in 1980.

Simultaneously, Farrell was married to his ‘M*A*S*H’ co-star Judy Farrell, with whom he shared two children. Their marriage ended in 1983.

Over a decade later, Fabares and Farrell reconnected during a CBS affiliates convention. A simple coffee date blossomed into a romance, leading to their marriage in 1984 at her aunt’s residence.

Merging their families proved to be a challenge. Farrell’s children took time to adjust to Fabares as their stepmother, a process she later described as requiring ‘a lot of love, patience, courage, and strength.’

The couple’s relationship was soon put to the test in a much more serious way. In 1994, while their home was under construction, Fabares fell through unfinished floor joists and fractured every rib on her left side.

As she received treatment for her injuries, doctors conducted routine bloodwork and discovered alarming liver counts. The cause remained unclear initially, but medication helped stabilize her condition for several years.

Facing a Life-Threatening Situation

In early 1999, Fabares experienced a sudden and serious esophageal bleed, necessitating an emergency visit to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Medical professionals attributed this incident to irreversible liver failure. They cautioned that without a transplant, another bleed could be fatal for her.

She was added to the transplant waiting list that April, fully aware of the grim statistics. More than half of those on the liver transplant list do not survive long enough to receive a transplant, a reality she later described as ‘living on borrowed time.’

The waiting period challenged both Fabares and Farrell in unexpected ways. Her transplant pager would occasionally malfunction, causing panic until they learned to remain calm in response to its alerts.

Finally, on October 23, 2000, after a 22-month wait, she received the call she had been hoping for. A spokesperson informed ABC News that Fabares had successfully undergone a liver transplant, with doctors optimistic about her recovery.

The surgery, conducted by surgeon Steve Colquhoun and hepatologist John Vierling at Cedars-Sinai, provided her with what she would eventually refer to as a new lease on life.

She frequently expressed gratitude for her husband, stating, ‘I’m so incredibly blessed by the man I am married to.’ Reflecting on her prolonged illness, she noted that, although they faced uncertainty, he stood by her unwaveringly.

In his later years, Farrell shifted his focus away from acting towards philanthropic endeavors, including prison reform and advocating for human rights, while remaining engaged in the entertainment industry.
