Ben Affleck Speaks Out on Divorce from Jennifer Lopez: ‘I Have Nothing but Respect’

Ben Affleck insists that his recent split from Jennifer Lopez was completely “drama-free.”

In his cover interview for GQ’s April 2025 issue, released Tuesday, the actor reflected on the public’s fascination with his life, joking that if fans sat down with him, their “eyes would glaze over with boredom” because it’s far less “sensational” than people imagine.

Addressing the end of his marriage to Lopez for the first time, Affleck, 52, dismissed claims that her Greatest Love Story Never Told documentary created a major rift between them.

He admitted that he’s naturally “more reserved and private” than his ex, acknowledging they didn’t always share the same views on living in the public spotlight.

Despite that, Affleck still chose to appear in the 2024 project to “support and love” Lopez at the time.

“You have to take responsibility for what you knew when you entered the relationship,” he said. “You can’t just watch the documentary and say, ‘Oh, now I get what went wrong.’ It’s never that simple.”

He went on to explain that real-life breakups rarely have dramatic headlines. “People always ask, ‘What happened?’ But there’s no single answer,” Affleck shared. “It’s more like two people navigating life and relationships the best they can just like anyone else.”

“There’s no ‘This person did this,’ or ‘That was the big moment.’ It’s more like a couple’s therapy session,” he added. “You start to recognize that both people bring their own issues into the relationship.”

Affleck and Lopez rekindled their early 2000s romance in 2021, got married in a spontaneous Las Vegas ceremony in 2022, and later held a larger celebration in Georgia.

Following their separation, Lopez gave her first post-split remarks in October 2024 during an Interview magazine feature, expressing excitement about rediscovering herself.

Reflecting on her independence, she said, “After everything I’ve been through in the last 25, 30 years being in all kinds of difficult situations I’m finally asking, what can I really do when I’m flying solo?”

As for Affleck, he chose not to get into personal details, explaining that doing so felt “a little too vulnerable” and “somewhat embarrassing.”

In the same GQ interview, the Good Will Hunting actor also touched on his co-parenting relationship with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, as well as a January visit to the FBI though he kept both topics fairly low-key.

Affleck and Lopez’s love story originally began in 2002, before their first split in 2004. Their renewed romance two decades later captured global attention until it quietly came to an end once again.
