Jamal Roberts’ A Cappella Performance of “First Time” Brings Jelly Roll to Tears During Emotional American Idol Finale
|In one of the most powerful moments of American Idol Season 23, finalist Jamal Roberts delivered an a cappella rendition of “First Time” that moved fellow contestant Jelly Roll to tears. The raw, soulful performance aired during a touching finale cut scene and quickly became one of the season’s most talked-about highlights.
Roberts, known for his velvet-smooth tone and heartfelt delivery, stunned both judges and fans with his stripped-down version of TEEKS’ 2021 hit. With no backing track—just his voice and presence—Jamal captivated the room, leaving Jelly Roll visibly emotional. The reaction underscored the depth of Roberts’ talent and the spiritual weight his voice carries.
Judges Praise Jamal Roberts for His Authenticity and Soul
Throughout the season, Roberts impressed the Idol panel with his consistency, poise, and vocal maturity. After his “First Time” performance, Carrie Underwood remarked, “You just feel so comfortable and sound so comfortable, and it sounds so good.” Luke Bryan playfully asked, “Will you teach me how to be that smooth?” while Lionel Richie praised Roberts’ storytelling, calling it “brilliant form.”
Later that night, Jamal brought more magic to the stage with a silky-smooth cover of The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).” Once again, the judges were in awe. Underwood highlighted his ability to keep things fresh, Bryan called him “one of the most amazing people I’ve ever seen on this show,” and Richie declared he was “divinely guided.”
New Single “Heal” Builds Momentum Before the Finale
Ahead of the finale, Roberts released his emotional new single “Heal,” a cover of Tom Odell’s 2013 track. His performance of the song on the April 28 episode earned a standing ovation from all three judges and resonated deeply with fans.
In a pre-finale message, Roberts reflected on the journey: “Tonight is a big night. We’ve worked hard for this. We’re at the end of the road.” He added a heartfelt piece of advice for fans: “Don’t second-guess yourself. Go with your first mind. Do your best.”
