Merle Haggard’s Legacy Lives On Through His Four Talented Sons—All Country Musicians

Country music icon Merle Haggard left behind more than just timeless songs—he left a powerful musical legacy carried on by his four sons.

Merle Haggard is widely regarded as one of the most influential country music legends of all time. With chart-topping hits, a string of awards, and a style that defined the Bakersfield sound, Haggard’s impact on American music is immeasurable. He earned numerous accolades throughout his career, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Haggard passed away on his 79th birthday—April 6, 2016—at his ranch in Shasta County, California. But his story didn’t end there. Today, his sons carry the torch, each with their own journey in country music.

Meet Merle Haggard’s Sons – All Musicians

Merle Haggard was married five times and had seven children—six of whom were publicly known, and one son who later emerged to honor his father’s legacy. Among them are four sons who have followed in his musical footsteps:

Marty Haggard (Born June 18, 1958)

Marty began in the entertainment industry as an actor before transitioning into music. He starred in the CBS drama The Fitzpatricks and landed a small role in a Henry Fonda film.

Marty charted five songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart between 1981 and 1987. He later joined Merle’s band, The Strangers, singing harmonies and playing rhythm guitar. In 1985, he earned a nomination for ACM Top Male Vocalist.

Today, Marty tours across the U.S., keeping his father’s music alive through tribute performances.

Noel Haggard (Born September 4, 1963)

Noel is best known for his rendition of “Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa,” which peaked at #74 in 2003. The song was originally released by Merle in 1986.

He, too, toured as part of The Strangers, building a devoted fanbase and contributing to the family’s musical narrative.

Scott Haggard (Born December 1968)

Though he didn’t grow up in the Haggard household, Scott always knew Merle was his father. After working as a truck driver, he pursued a full-time music career in 2006.

Scott has performed with artists like Mark Wills, Jeff Bates, and Charlie McCoy, and frequently honors Merle with covers like “Silver Wings.” He’s also written original music and built his own place in the country scene.

Ben Haggard (Born December 14, 1992)

The youngest of the Haggard sons, Ben Haggard may be the most widely recognized by today’s audiences. Ben was Merle’s lead guitarist for many years and has developed a significant fanbase of his own through YouTube and Facebook videos featuring traditional country and gospel covers.

Following Merle’s death, Ben and his brothers continued performing and even toured with Kris Kristofferson, honoring their father’s memory at every stop.

The Haggard Brothers Continue the Legacy

Together, Merle Haggard’s sons keep his memory and music alive, drawing thousands of fans across the country. Their passion for traditional country music and their dedication to honoring their father’s legacy make them a unique force in the genre.
