William Shatner and Daughter Melanie Reveal They Secretly Battled Stage 4 Cancer at the Same Time
William Shatner, the legendary actor best known for portraying Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, has shared one of the most personal chapters of his life. In a new interview, the 95-year-old actor revealed that he and his youngest daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, 61, were both diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer just months apart—and quietly fought their battles at the same time. Today, both are cancer-free and using their experience to encourage others facing serious illness.
A Devastating Diagnosis for Father and Daughter
The family’s difficult journey began in 2022, when Melanie discovered a lump in her breast. Doctors diagnosed her with HER2-positive Stage 4 breast cancer, which had spread to lymph nodes in her chest. Her treatment was extensive and included multiple rounds of chemotherapy, HER2-targeted therapy, a double mastectomy, and 30 radiation treatments.

Just as Melanie was approaching the end of her treatment, another devastating diagnosis struck the family.
In 2023, William Shatner noticed a lump on his cheek. What initially appeared to be a minor issue was ultimately diagnosed as Stage 4 malignant melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer that had already spread to his lungs and brain.
William Shatner Underwent Surgery and Immunotherapy
Doctors removed the tumor from Shatner’s cheek through surgery before beginning an intensive course of immunotherapy, which continued for approximately two years.
Despite facing an advanced cancer diagnosis in his nineties, Shatner continued working whenever possible and maintained an optimistic outlook throughout his treatment.

Reflecting on their experience, he credited the medical teams who cared for both him and his daughter.
“We got the perfect doctors for her cancer and my cancer,” Shatner said.
A Daughter Worried More About Her Father Than Herself
Although Melanie was enduring aggressive cancer treatment, she admitted that one of her greatest fears was losing her father while fighting for her own life.
She recalled thinking:
“I don’t have the strength to take care of myself and lose my father at the same time.”
Her husband, actor Joel Gretsch, and the rest of the family made sure William was never alone, regularly visiting him, bringing meals, and spending evenings together while both father and daughter focused on recovery.

William Shatner Supported His Daughter Every Step of the Way
Throughout Melanie’s treatment, Shatner remained determined to ease her worries wherever he could.
According to Melanie, one of the first things her father told her after her diagnosis was:
“I do not want you to worry. Just send me the bills.”
His support extended beyond finances. Melanie said her father constantly encouraged her to stay positive and never allowed cancer to define his own life, continuing to work and move forward despite his diagnosis.
