Albert Brooks Remembers His “Oldest Friend” Rob Reiner: “I’m Still in That Not Believing It Stage”

Hollywood is still grieving the devastating loss of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner — and among those most deeply affected is actor and comedian Albert Brooks, who says the tragedy still feels unreal.

In a preview for the upcoming CBS News special “Rob Reiner – Scenes from a Life,” Brooks reflects on their lifelong friendship and the shock he continues to feel after Reiner’s death on December 14, 2025.

A Friendship That Began 60 Years Ago

Brooks and Reiner met as teenagers at Beverly Hills High School, forming a bond that lasted six decades.
Rob was my oldest friend. It’s that simple,” Brooks said. “I met him when I was 14 years old. So I’m still in that not believing it stage.

Their connection carried through every era of their careers, from school drama classes to major Hollywood collaborations — including Reiner’s 2023 HBO documentary “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life,” which he directed.

A Loss That Still Doesn’t Feel Real

Reiner and Michele were found fatally stabbed in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, has since been charged with first-degree murder.

Brooks admitted the news is still sinking in.

I know it happened… but two days ago, I actually called his number,” he said. “There are moments when I forget he’s gone.”

He added that speaking publicly about Reiner brings up both heartbreak and gratitude.

I love talking about them because it’s genuine and rare. I just wish there was no reason to do this.

Revisiting the Past Together

The longtime friends filmed a CBS Sunday Morning segment in 2023 at their former high school — the first time they had returned since graduation.

Reiner joked, “It brings back no memories,” and Brooks replied, “Nothing. Nothing.
Their easy banter showcased a friendship built on humor, history, and deep mutual affection.

A Creative Partnership

Although they only appeared in one film together — 1999’s The Muse — their professional admiration was well known.
Brooks recalled hiring Reiner for the role, while Reiner said he was grateful to be part of the project.

Reiner later directed Brooks’ documentary, calling it a chance to honor a friend who shaped so much of his life.

A Legacy of Friendship, Laughter, and Storytelling

As Hollywood continues to process the shocking tragedy, Brooks’ emotional tribute stands out as a reminder of how deeply Rob Reiner impacted the people around him.

Their 60-year friendship — filled with collaboration, humor, and unwavering loyalty — remains one of Hollywood’s great stories.

Reiner’s influence as a filmmaker, actor, and friend continues to resonate through those who knew him best.
