Rather than performing a cover, Harper chose to audition with an original song titled “String Cheese.” Inspired by her experience with postpartum depression following the birth of her youngest child, the song offered an intimate look at vulnerability, faith, and purpose.

When judge Lionel Richie asked about the song’s meaning, Harper explained that during a particularly dark moment, she felt overwhelmed and emotionally withdrawn. A small, ordinary interaction—her son repeatedly asking her to open his string cheese—helped ground her and reconnect her to her role as a mother.

“I realized that where I was, right there in my house, was exactly where God wanted me to be,” Harper shared. “Being a mom was the biggest ministry I could ever have.”

Judges React With Emotion and Praise

Harper’s performance filled the audition room with quiet emotion. Carrie Underwood was visibly moved, later calling Harper her “favorite person” to walk into the audition room that day.

Luke Bryan praised her songwriting and vocal tone, comparing her to Kacey Musgraves, Alison Krauss, and Dolly Parton, noting her ability to truly move listeners. Richie highlighted her storytelling and emotional depth, encouraging her to continue leaning into authenticity.

With three strong “yes” votes, Hannah Harper earned her place in Idol University, officially advancing in the competition.
